These are my latest FO and will be going to their new home soon. The little guys with the hats are Mini-OctoGottcha's. I thought that the boys who are going to get the hats, would love one of them in the same color. Whatcha think?

I enjoy making them and watching them each take on a personality of their own as their faces are sewn onto the hat.

OctoGottcha vs Loctollipop

When this critter was first designed, its name was Loctollipop. However due to people not being able to say or remember the name, they now are OctoGottchas. Octo because they look like an octopus. And Gottcha because if they are placed on your head, even for an instant, they've "Gottcha" brain!

Recently, in getting ready for a craft show in April, I made the batch below. The bodies of the ones above are about 4" tall, while the ones below have a body only about 2" tall. They are the perfect size to give as surprises to the kids that come up to my table, or to children while I'm "out & about". They are especially helpful when at the doctor's office, given to a child who is frightened or miserably sick. For some reason ( I can't figure out why . . . LOL ) the thought of sucking the brains out of someone, then putting those brains in their own heads, seems to brighten even the most ill child ~:o) Sure wish I'd have thought of them when my own children were young!

Victorian Christmas at the Agrirama - Saturday Decrmber 10, 2011

On Saturday, December 10, 2011 I was given the opportunity to take part in the Victorian Christmas Celebration at the Agrirama here. My table was set up inside the Museum, along with other sellers. We were entertained by three groups of talented Cloggers early in the day, and later by three sisters who sang carols. Their voices were amazing and the accoustics gave them a slight echo effect that added to their natural abilities. It was a very moving experience.

This was our table, although you can't see it very well;

We had a great time and plan to take part in the Spring Folklife Festival that is scheduled to happen on April 14, 2012. That time we will set up outside, unless the spring rains fall, in which case they will move us indoors again.

The children who came to our table were the most fun. They loved the things we had set out, and were thrilled when they had enough money to buy one of them, and when we gave them something for free. We had a big lot of "Scrappers" to give away, and gave some of the hamsters away, and a bunch of bead necklaces. I think we had even more fun giving things to them than they had, although from what others told us, the kids were thrilled with their goodies.

These kettles are the way my grandmother dyed her fiber, both cotton and wool.

As you can see, it also dyes the hands of the worker~

Isn't the fiber lovely hanging to dry?

One of the purposes of the Agrirama is to educate the young, and old, about the ways out ancestors lived, worked, and ate.

Police: Syringes Hidden in Clothing at a Wal-Mart Store

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. - Authorities in Bartow County are investigating a series of incidents where syringes have been found in clothing at a Wal-Mart store.

Authorities with the Bartow County Sheriff's Office say the syringes were hidden in several items oof children's or women's clothing, including bras, at a Wal-Mart store in Cartersville on Market Blvd.

Authorities say four incidents have occurred since October 13. They say two of the incidents resulted in some kind of medical treatment.

Patricia Headrick said she was at the Wal-Mart on Black Friday when she went to pick up a Playtex bra.

"I put my hand down into the box and that's when it pricked me," Headrick said.

Once the initial shock wore off, Headrick said she became concerned with where the needle came from.

"Whose arm was this in? Whose body? Was this a used needle?" Headrick said.

Sgt. Jonathan Rogers of the Bartow County Sheriff's Office said other incidents included a needle found in a Hello Kitty socks and a 14-year-old girl was pricked by a needle in pajamas. The 14-year-old's mother was also pricked while checking the pajamas.

Authorities would only say that they were diabetic syringes that can be purchased at most pharmacies. Rogers said the needles would be tested in a crime lab.

Headrick said the next six months will be a waiting game for her and her family as she awaits tests. She said she's already $1,300 for medicines to help prevent a number of diseases.

"I'm scared to death. I don't know what's going to happen," Headrick said.

Authorities are going over surveillance video, looking for suspicious acitivites. It is unclear when the tests will come back on the syringes.

A while back I got an Etsy PM from a teenage girl, asking if I would give her one of my crocheted dogs for her little brother, for free. In return she said that she would make a video showing the dog and telling who made it.

I could not resist her attitude and enterprise. So of course I send one to her.

She’s a really cute girl and with her brains & go-get-em attitude, I think she’ll go far in life. So go see what all Jessica has on her You Tube account. She may have reviewed something you would like too~

Do you wear hats? I'm not a big hat person, but recently found one that I really do like . . .

What do you think? It's different, right? And rather cheerfully colored, right? Who doesn't want to have a dead fish on their head? And if I want to hide, I can just pull the hat down over my face~

There are patterns on the net for both knit and crochet Dead Fish hats~

I plan to take a few to the gig at Agrirama next month, in case one or two might sell~:o)

I had forgotten this incident until someone in Ravelry commennted on it today. This happened on January 7, 2010 - - -

While waiting to see the doctor y'day, an older lady in a wheelchair came in. She sat in the same waiting room and was enthralled with our crocheting. My daughter was there with me, and was also crocheting.

     After watching from across the room, and commenting on our work for a while, she wheeled over to us so we could chat better, and so she could touch our yarn. She loved the Lion Suede and the cowl-hood.

     Not long before I was called back, I had gotten too warm so removed my neckwarmer, and began folding it to put in my GoBag with the matching hat. She thought it was beautiful so I let her feel its yarn. It is in Amore, so is also very soft and touchable.

     As I completed folding it, she asked if I ever made sets like that to sell. I finished folding it & the hat as I told her that I don't (a small fib) but that I do give things away, and handed it to her. She was stunned by the gift and wanted to pay me for it. Well, in my world, you don't pay for things that are freely given to you, so I told her that with smiles and a gentle touch.

     Before we left the office, she asked for my number & address. And this morning she called me to tell me again how much she appreciated it, and said that after she got home, she held the set and cried over the kindness of a stranger.

We are always repaid for kindness. The more kindness we give freely away, the more kindness comes out way.  Give a little kindness, RAK a stranger today~

Use the same size yarn & hook thatyou used to make Cute Kitty, or make adjustments as needed to assurethe dress fits.

1. Chain 35, sc in 5^th ch from hook and in each ch to end. Ch 1, turn. (30 sc)

2. Sl st in 11 sts, hdc in 8 sts, sl st in last 11 sts. 6 sc in loop formed by skipped chain stitches, sl st in each st across to end. End off yarn and weave ends in.

3. Add button to end without the loop. The loop is your buttonhole.

Bib of dress;

Join yarn with sl st in first hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc in same stitch, hdc in each hdc across, 2 hdc in last hdc. Ch 2, turn. (10)

1 hdc in same stitch, hdc in each hdc across, 2 hdc in last hdc. Ch 2, turn. (12)

1 hdc in same stitch, hdc in each hdc across, 2 hdc in last hdc. (14)

Skirt of dress;

Chain 18, join with sl st to hdc on other side of bib, be careful not to twist chain. Ch 2, do not turn.

hdc in next stitch, ch 1, repeat around. Join with sl st. ch 4.

2 tr in each ch-1 space around. (64 tr). Join with sl st, ch 4.

1 tr in next st, ch 1, repeat around. (64 tr). Join with sl st, ch 3.

sc in top of next tr, ch 3, repeat around. Join with sl st.

End off yarn and weave ends in.

Weave a length of 1/4” ribbon throughhdc's that form the waistband of the dress.

What am I working on now?

Have you read any of the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey? The series of books are about human-kind who have settled on a planet that they named Pern. Dragons live there, flying, fire-breathing dragons! They are empathetic with humans and bond, one dragon to one human for life. There are also fire lizards there, a much, much smaller version of the dragons.

What on earth does this have to do with what I am crocheting? Or are you already there?

Using a pattern from Lucy Ravenscar's Etsy store and a beautiful metallic gold yarn, I am crocheting her Dragonet pattern to crochet a gold Queen Fire Lizard. Clara, of the Etsy store 6060 hand-painted special eyes for the Fire Lizards. And they are beautiful, perfect for them!

When the first (I am making two) of the dragons is finished I will post photos of her. But until then, here is Lucy Ravenscar's photo from her Etsy store - - -

I had to put off starting work on them last month, due to an emergency appendectomy. My appendix was not far from bursting, and had "oozed" a bit. I was very lucky to have gotten in when I did, and to have great doctors and nurses. They "mopped up" well before closing, then pumped me full of 3 types of antibiotics for four days. So now, except for a sore hand where the last IV was, and still getting tired a bit too quickly, I'm "all better now" as our kids used to say.

So now, after making hamsters by the dozens, I've now moved onward and upward to crocheting beautiful golden Dragons~ ~ ~

They, and many more Ami's and other projects, will be going with me to the Agrirama's Independence Day Celebration. I'll be exhibiting inside the museum that day. I am super excited and even more nervous! Also am very curious about how it will go. One thing for sure, it will be a very long day for me.
We have to start setting up at 7a.m., and the doors open at 9 till 4 or 4:30. I'll be a very tired, but hopefully a very happy, puppy by then. As long as a few people show up that I know, to stop by for a chat, I'll enjoy the day tremendously!

Meet Bucky Bunny

The actual star of the book will be Rouge, a white teddy bear. He and Bucky & Blink will have some wild adventures if the author continues in the vein she has begun. And no, it is not me, nor anyone in my house. You'll just have to wait and see~

I finally finished Lucifer's Hammer, illness kept me from finishing it in my usual time. While the book is about the end of the world as we know it, due to Earth being hit by an asteroid, it is also a book about the struggles of people to help one another in living and regaining the advances that mankind had made in the past century. In other words, to me it is a book of hope for mankind, should a worldwide event destroy what we have built.

Now I am almost finished with To Catch A Theif by Christina Skye. It's an easy read fiction, entertaining and relaxing to read. I enjoy her books and re-read them annually. Hey, at least the cover's nice to look at~ ~LOL~

Next? I'm not sure, maybe a non-fiction book for a change-of-pace?

I bought the pattern from Crafty Deb on Etsy. Also bought her Spunky Monkey pattern that was too adorable to pass up. Both look easy to make, and quick. So I hope to have a bunch of both to donate to needy kids this holiday season!

WIP Wednesday

I usually forget WIP Wednesday, but today I made it barely in time~

I'm crocheting some wrist warmer, hat, and cowl sets. Using a washable wool/acrylic blend for them and they are soooo soft. One set is finished, but I need to find a mannequin to borrow for a photo shoot to get photos of them. Another set is underway but going slowly, as I am having to figure out how I did the first hat and write the pattern down as I go.

I'm using this pattern from Bella Crochet to make the white wristers and the mobius cowl. The hat will be from my own pattern.

Also just finished another pair of wristers and a different set for our DIL. At least crochet keeps me busy and off the streets, with the price of gas getting so high, yarn seems a bargain! ~LOL~

Sick and Crocheting

I've been sick, so have not crocheted much. But I did finish one sock in a pattern testing. It's the Smoothie Sock by MsBusyFingers, and is a very comfortable and well fitting sock. The pattern should be available on Ravelry soon.

Wendy has been working on a pattern testing too. It's the Cutest little girl's sun dress. She hasn't completed it yet, but all that's left is more of the skirt. Here's a photo of it on my Po Bear . . .

Have you ever had the opportunity to visit the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida? If so, you know the layout - it's big and stretched out . . .

We had to go there for a "second opinion" and boy did we get our daily walking in! Why is it, I wonder, that when you are sent for a test you have to leave the area you are in and walk the entire length of the facility? Do you think they lay it out that way on purpose? Yeah, me too~

First we sat to wait to see the doctor in the Canaday building.

* Had a length of time until the first test, so we went to the Cafe in the Canaday building.

Then came a test in the Mayo building, where we sat again to wait for our turn.

* Had a length of time until the first test, so we went to the Cafe in the Canaday building.

Next it was go back to the clinic in Canaday building to sit again to wait for our turn. Ok, not bad so far.

* Had a length of time until the first test, so we went to the Cafe in the Canaday building.

Then it was go to the Davis building at the back of the building of course~ and sit again to wait for our turn.

Of course we had to return to the Canaday building, to sit again to wait.

Tom Foolery aside, the staff at the Mayo are effecient and friendly. They take care of multitudes of people quickly and well.

The cafe was in the Canaday building, hence the hours between tests we went there for tea or food. The food there is healthy, of course, and quite tasty.

Between the walking and the waiting, my legs and backside are tired! Add to that the 4 hour drive to get home, with a meal about half-way due to the hours of our travel.

Need I say that we could happily stay at home for the next week?

And it looks like we get to do it again next month. Our cats are NOT going to like our being gone again. At least they've forgiven us now for being gone for four days and are "allowing" us to pet and scratch them again.

That's what I said to myself after ordering this -

It is a "Meggie", a kick spindle~ Today, if we can drag our very tired bodies out & into town, I will get a hands-on teaching session on how to spin fiber into yarn. Yet I already have two, TWO, drop spindles that I love, and have ordered the Meggie from Heavenly Handspinning AND I have 3 pounds of fiber, roving, to spin. The Meggie's price is great, she is very portable, takes up almost no space, and can be sat on the floor or a table to use. In our cramped living space, she is perfect. I wonder what her name will be . . . My spindle #1 is Betsy Mae, spindle #2 is Jenny (Jennifer gifted her to me, so she had to be named after Jen). Naturally my Meggie will have to have a name too~:o)

Some may say, "Yep, she's lost it for sure this time." Others would know that this is an ancient art that I have wanted to learn for more years than I can count. And that's true. I don't have a clue as to why I waited until I was 66 years old to learn, but I do plan to have a total blast with it now!

When I produce some yarn worth showing, I will post photos. I have some very pretty roving, so if today's lesson goes well, maybe I will get to post some soon~

Little Britches Dishcloth pattern

Britches Dishcloths

Size H hook
4 ply 100% Cotton Yarn
Ribbon for joining

Make 2 cloths to make the britches

Row 1: ch 28, counting the loop on the hook, dbl crochet in 3rd ch from hook and in each st across, (27 dc)

Row 2: Ch 2, counts as first dc now and throughout, turn, dc in each st across (27 dc)

Row 3-14: Repeat row 2. Finish off.

Fold each dishcloth in half and thread ribbon through second from the bottom row, gather and tie a bow in each. this will form the bottom of the "britches" leg. Then thread ribbon through second from top row starting on the front and continuing around and connecting both dishcloths in the back and continuing around to the front. Gather and tie to form waist of pants. Tie one more ribbon 4 or 5 rows from waist connecting both together to form fly.

Attach the following poem and they are ready to give away:

Now don't get excited,

Don't be misled.

These aren't for you,

But our dishes instead.

Just pull on the bow,

Take out the stitches,

You've gained two dishcloths,

But, you've lost your....britches.

I began looking for this book as soon as I got my Kindle. And requested that it be released to Kindle every week. Finally it is available! I've worn out two or three copies of the book in paperback because I read it over and over, but maybe now that it's an e-book it won't wear out~:o)
Lucifer's Hammer is a story of what happens to Earth when a comet hits. It follows a few people from discovery of the comet, through the strikes on Earth, and their efforts to rebuild their corner of civilization.

It's a bright sunny morning here, with ice/snow possible late today? Weird weather!!! But as it clouds up and gets colder it will be a super day for crocheting, spinning, and of course Reading~

New Projects to work on~

When this pattern came in, I got busy on making one right away. I think they would do well at a Spring Folklife Festival and want to have several by then.

This is a dishcloth like my Grandmother used to make. It always seemed a shame to use it as such~

And I will be making a bag of Little Britches dishcloths. In case you are not old enough to remember such, this is what two pair of them look like. When you pull out the ribbon, you have two rectangular or square dishcloths~

Since it is supposed to represent the crafts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, I will also take at least one thread project. Maybe a couple of doilies and this filet;

And what crochet craft item of that time period would be complete without an afghan? Will have to make a couple of Spidey'ghans for the show . . .

Actually I know what I've done now, I spent some money while in my pj's.

For quite some time now, I've been watching e-friends learning to spin yarn, beautiful yarn! It finally got to me and I decided to get a drop spindle so I could try spinning in a small way. This is what I ordered,

The kit will let me give spinning on the spindle a try, and hopefully by next summer I will be able to do something I've wanted to do for the past 14 years, pick cotton from the fields after the harvesters go through, then prepare it, dye it, spin it into yarn and crochet or knit something for DH.

People in this generation are used to seeing vegetables grown so we can eat them, but not to seeing a green plant with pretty light lavender flowers that later become a bole of cotton, and know that later on that white bole of cotton is turned into clothing, sheetes, towels, etc. It has always fascinated DH, so I want to make him a gift of a cotton item that he saw go from the plant into the finished product. Hopefully it will be a gift of wonder~

This morning I took some things I'd crocheted to town, for the DFACS unit that handles the children who have been removed from their homes for their safety. Ten of the Purple Best Buds, and at least that many of the OctoGottcha/Loctollipops, and a few other assorted items.

Did I take a photo of any of them before leaving them in town? No, of course not. I've been meaning to get photos for days, but kept forgetting. I swear that soon I'll have to wear two tags every time I leave home . . .
One with my name on it, worn upside down so I'll know who I am;
The other with the words, "If you find me, please return me to . . " and my address or phone number where there's someone who will come get me.
Sheesh!

Maybe Santa will bring me one for Christmas? I've tried to be a good girl. heh, heh, hehehehehehe~~~

Another day, another project! Next on my list is a Hooded Neckwarmer.

The pattern is at Annie's Attic, Chunky Hooded Neck Warmer

It looks like an easy pattern, and one that will work up quickly. You might wonder why I want to make one at all when today's high is supposed to be 70F. But in a few days, we'll be having lows in the mid-20's again. Since much of my "going" is done fairly early in the day, I'm sure this will feel pretty good when it turns off cool again~

Also have to call around today to find homes for ten Purple Best Bud dolls. I'm sure one of the facilities here will want some for children that are brought in due to domestic violence. And at this time of year, even without the economic downturn, there is far too much of that, and violence of every kind.

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season, whatever holiday you may celebrate. So Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone~

Dishcloth War? It's on?

Crochet Goddess said it first, the Dishcloth War Is On and in our house it appears that she is right. Wendy and I also are hard at work on dishcloths for Christmas.

We enjoy making them because they are "brainless" hand-work that is useful, used, and enjoyed by those who receive them, including us.

As a child I had never used a Store Bought dishcloth. All of ours were hand crocheted by someone in the family. But as a young housewife, I never used a hand-made dishcloth. Then, many years later, after being retired early due to medical issues, I began crocheting my own again and now wonder why I ever liked the store-bought ones.

So today we will be making more dishcloths for gifting to friends and family, as we rest and watch a movie or two. We had a not-fun day at the doctor's and pharmacy yesterday, and actually are in need of a day to just rest.

While at the doctor's, I got my pneumonia shot/booster. Darned if it doesn't have my shoulder feeling like it's the size of a grapefruit! I've never had a reaction to the shots before, and wonder if they changed the formula or if I've just gotten more sensitive . . . . Me? Sensitive? BwaaaHahahahaha~

Row 2: sc in 1st st, *ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in next st. Repeat from * to end of row. ch 2, turn.

Row 3: dc in 2nd st, * dc in next st. Repeat from * to end of row. ch 1, turn.

Row 4 – 17: Repeat rows 2 and 3.

Row 18: Repeat row 2. ch 1, turn.

Row 19: sc in 1st st and each st across. Finish off yarn and weave ends in before adding border.

Border Row 1 (contrast color is best): join with sl st to any corner st. 1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc in same stitch. * sc in every st to next corner. 1 sc, ch 1, 1sc in corner stitch. * Repeat from * on all sides of cloth, being careful to work 2 sc into each side of dc st on side of cloth and 1 sc in each sc st on side of cloth (both sides). Spidey-ghan AKA Superhero Dreamcatcher Afghan

I found out this morning that my Spidey-ghan pattern has been posted on Ravelry by other crafters as a Project they have made, 386 times! What a wonderful feeling to know that at least 386 Spiderman fans have their own Spidey'ghan to snuggle with!

Whether you Crochet, by my pattern, or Knit by Anne's patern (Anne is a lovely lady in Finland who translated the pattern from crochet to knit.) you can make a Spidey'ghan for your Spiderman fan too.

Afghans and OctoGottchas

I've been working on several on-going WIP's - OctoGottcha creatures for the Fall Arts & Crafts fairs, Pot & Plate Pinchers (my variation of the pattern), dishcloths, potholders, etc. And helping Wendy G with an afghan she promised a cute little girl. I'm making most of the squares, she is making less squares but is going to assemble the afghan.

An OctoGottcha is a creature that is very mischevious. When it's human puts it on another person's head, it sneaks out some of that person's brains, then puts them into its person's head. Of course the human must be very careful as to who's head they choose for their OctoGottcha so that they don't accidently have dumb-brains snuck out and placed into their head. That would be awful! This is what some of the OctoGottchas look like, so you can be wary of anyone with one of these little guys on their shoulder . . . . . .

You should also be alert for the Hogtopus. They behave the same way, but look a little bit different . . . . . . .

A RAK and a Hogtopus!

Yesterday I received a package from Britian! It was a RAK from a dear e-friend there. She sent some marvelously wonderful things for me to use!

Delicious yarn in TWO flavors! Beads and Sequins in three color ranges, and Safety Eyes for my Amigurumis! What an absolutely wonderful friend! And I know just what I'm going to use each of the yarns and eyes for already! The beads and sequins will go on a LOT of future projects. A terrific haul!

And my Hogtopus Amigurumi is finally looking the way I wanted it to look.

PJ Damnit Day

Preface: Our daughter has had since birth, multiple medical conditions that cause constant and unrelenting pain. Along with those, she has other medical conditions that cause her to be tired all of the time, sometimes so tired that it is an effort to simply keep breathing in and out.

Several years ago, our daughter woke up one morning hurting so badly and so exhausted, that she said, "F--k It! I'm staying in my pajamas all day and not doing a single thing except rest!"

Thus was born PJ F-It Day, which I cleaned up to become PJ Damnit Day~

I now have them also, due to the medical conditions that caused me to retire early on disability. Sometimes she and I have them on the same day. Sometimes on different days. Now and then, when she drives the hour-plus, to visit and stays overnight, we have a PJ Damnit Day together.

Those are fun days, sort of. We sit in our PJ's, watching goofy movies on the TV, watch the four cats play, crochet, read, compute, and chat, for the entire day. We have a very easy, simple lunch and supper, unless my DH brings take-out home for the three of us. If we could get rid of the pain and exhaustion, those would be totally wonderful days!

A Brutal Defense - The Fighting Attitude for the Disabled & Use of the Common Cane

Civilians have a very difficult time understanding that a defense cannot be played out as if one is the good guy in an old western. There is no fair fighting in a fight for your life or limbs. Untold numbers of new concealed carry first-time class goers invariably have the fellow student who asks, "Can’t I just shoot him in the leg?"

By our very nature we are not of the same ilk as the sociopath who targets us. This very fact of our nature makes it difficult for the civilian, who most likely has never been involved in a life or death violent encounter, to take the appropriate defensive action unless it has been successfully ingrained by repetition.

Repetition of rote training of draw, fire, assess, as well as things like tap and rack to clear a jam. It needs repeated over and over again until the muscles have been trained to the point of being able to duplicate the complex maneuvers, the same as how repetition finally allowed us to successfully drink from a cup instead of a bottle with a nipple on it.

Repetition helps a fit civilian to begin to even the odds in a violent encounter, but the attacker is by default at an advantage simply for being the attacker. Civilians are further disadvantaged by (thankfully) not having to regularly endure life or death violent encounters. Direct experience builds points of reference to draw on and learn from for future events that may occur. A battle hardened warrior who has seen much combat has knowledge that a civilian does not, and hopefully never will, have.

A civilian defensive operator (my term for the civilian with a permit to carry a concealed weapon) who is disabled in one way or another is more disadvantaged than a fit civilian with no handicaps. The disabled are more likely to also be a preferred target of many a sociopathic predator.

A gun is a great defensive tool for many of those with varying degrees and types of disabilities. Of course a gun is a lethal or deadly force weapon that can only be used to defend one’s life in the event that one is in imminent fear of death or grave bodily harm. (This is based on my state of residence. The reader needs to know the specifics of law in his own jurisdiction.)

Though in theory a disabled person needs to practice defensive maneuvers more than most fit individuals to attain the best level of proficiency attainable, it is actually less likely that a disabled person will, in fact, practice more. The disability may prevent a regular regimen of scheduled practice. So for the disabled who are reading this article, let me encourage you to incorporate into your life some structured practice that is followed as religiously as possible.

Let’s put the gun training aside for this article and focus on developing an instant and explosive counter to an initial attack from a predator. Let’s say for purposes of this article that you can readily interpret the language of when the first strike is coming. For our scenario, you do have a holstered gun on your body but have not been justified in displaying it or using it yet.

We can’t walk or wheel around with our gun held in our shooting hand within the confines of normal public society. That cashier at the convenience store would be just as upset as your waitress at the restaurant if you tried that. And I know that the officer you may encounter won’t be happy to see that gun in your hand. But actually having a weapon in your hand is advantageous for repelling a sudden violent attack. A gun inside a coat pocket with that shooting hand in a proper grip is the next best thing, but even this is not a perfect fix to gaining an advantage. Actually, there is no "perfect" fix, but there are some that are better than others.

If your disability requires you to use a cane, this will be right up your alley. If your disability is evident or visible in public, then I do recommend considering the addition of a cane as an always-with-you accessory. Even if your disability has nothing to do with your legs, if you can incorporate the use of a cane, try it for awhile.

Not just any cane either. Try a regular wooden crook handle cane. No fancy handles, no metal with push button extension pieces, just plain wood with the crook handle. I’m trying to get a manufacturer to make one out of a particular polycarbonate that will look like wood, but take extreme abuse. I haven’t heard back from them as of the date of this article submission.

If you use a quad, or other specialty cane due to the particulars of your handicap, then you can adapt some things I’m going to talk about. The reasons I recommend the plain cane is that it gets through just about every security checkpoint easier than anything fancy ever will. Security is on the lookout for sword and other types of cane weapons, but a plain cane is just an adaptive device to enable the disabled.

I am a very big advocate of teaching defensive operators to not call attention to their selves. We should not want to look like the person who is carrying any sort of weapon. Oh I can hear it now. "What about looking dangerous to criminals?" Yes, there is merit in presenting yourself as aware and confident. But if you have a visible handicap, you are already higher up on the "pick me" list for criminals.

A cane in the hand of a disabled person is a weapon that can be instantly deployed. It is also very versatile. It can be used in a fashion to allow time to draw a primary weapon, it can be used in instances that a gun cannot, and it can also be used as a primary lethal force weapon.

I would really like everyone to realize that they aren’t as tough as they think they are, but I’d especially like . . . Oh how do I say this politely? I’d like all of us old, fat, handicapped guys to particularly realize it! Although there are most certainly exceptions to the rule, it is more likely that a twenty-two year-old hoodlum will be able to run faster, jump higher, and hit harder than a seventy year-old retired Buick salesman.

This makes the brutality of defensive response to a physical attack of great concern to me as I consider how one should respond to attack if he happens to be disabled to one degree or another. There are so many legal considerations I wouldn’t be able to address them here. Know your laws in considering what I’m about to say.

The defensive operator is the only one who can truly judge what to do if attacked. Laws are in place to judge those who go beyond what society has considered an appropriate response. The disparity of force issue comes into play when a disabled person is attacked by a so-called physically fit criminal.

I could fill a book with subtle dynamics of force response as could any person who teaches or discusses this stuff. So instead of selling you an encyclopedia, let’s just stick to basics. A muscular hoodlum punching an old woman in her face to take her purse could very well kill her with a solitary punch. That same old woman cracking her cane over the thug’s head may only raise a slight welt.

Sure there is the possibility of a freak accident happening where the old woman causes a concussion inside the thug’s head that could lead to his death, but statistically for the mentioned scenario, it is unlikely.

So let me just repeat instructions that I gave to my mom who walked with a cane, but did not carry a gun. She knew how to use one, but didn’t carry. I remember her racking a twelve gauge out an open living room window when two criminals were trying to break into the house through the basement door when I was a kid, but she didn’t carry.

My mom died a few years ago. When she became a frail senior I taught her what to do to up her odds of surviving a violent encounter by utilizing her cane. I taught her all about the more sensitive areas of the human body that civilian martial arts schools teach to avoid in sparring and training.

I taught my mom to attack the face of an attacker with as much force as she could physically muster. I taught her that blinding a criminal trying to hurt her with any sharp object, or even using her fingers, was more preferable to me than having to attend her funeral or visiting her in the hospital.

I taught her that slamming that cane up into the throat of an attacker in hopes of cutting off his ability to breathe was better than her getting her hip broken by him shoving her down onto a sidewalk.

I taught her to only go a bit lighter when hitting an attacker’s testicles for the simple fact of how the brain responds to trauma. When trauma is severe, the brain cuts off the full effect of pain. A smack to the testicles will allow more pain to be felt than what would be felt from a really hard hit.

The point is to cause pain to an attacker as well as to physically make it impossible for him to continue his attack. A disabled person has to be choosey about where they hit an attacker in the act of self-defense. Punching the attacker in the stomach would not be disabling if my mom was the one hitting the hypothetical attacker of my instructive sessions. Whacking his ears, elbow or wrist joints, bridge of the nose, or throat with that cane of hers would cause pain at a threshold high enough to allow small amounts of time to mount an even more aggressive counter attack.

A hard smack of a wooden cane right in the lips, at the temple, and at the base of the skull can work wonders to deter all but the most determined attackers. The problem was that my mom wasn’t strong enough in her frail years to inflict enough trauma to an attacker to make it physically impossible for him to continue an attack.

However she was strong enough to target and sustain multiple hits on an attacker who had not yet caused her any disabling trauma. She probably could have kept hitting for about thirty seconds to a minute under the influence of adrenalin. Couple that with screaming her head off, and she might have had a chance against some attackers.

So there it is. The disabled need to really put their all into hitting vulnerable pain causing, and disabling areas of an attacker until either the attacker gives up, help arrives, or a gun is successfully deployed and employed (if appropriate).

Having a weapon in hand at all times while out in public is of great benefit. And a plain old wooden crook handle cane that easily gets through most security without questions is a great tool to add to the repertoire. Even if you don’t need a cane, I’d still recommend considering the benefits of having one with you where firearms aren’t allowed.

If a friend asks why you have a cane at the school play, you can explain your need of assistance with that bum knee, ankle, leg, hip, foot, or whatever is causing some problems occasionally. No need to even lie because as we age stuff starts to hurt. If you are out among strangers, they have no idea what your handicap is or isn’t.

Seriously, have you ever wondered if that person you see with a cane actually is handicapped or not? If it’s not that obscure uncle who you know is scamming a disability claim, then we just don’t think about it. However we do pay more attention to fancy or quad canes by nature. That’s why I recommend the plain old cane.

A cane in the hands of a moderately disabled person can be quite an effective self-defense tool. In the hands of someone who is mildly disabled it is even more effective. Wrap a leather wrist strap around it so it can’t get knocked out of your hands. That’s the only accessory I would recommend.

The cane can strike, leverage, poke, hook, and so much more. It can help you back to your feet, and even help stabilize to prevent going to the ground. And it doesn’t take years of practice to be able to do a good amount of counter attack damage. Try one.

Think about how well it may have worked to whack a few nuts with box cutters who changed the way we look at everything here in our Great Land. A cane can be carried in more places and with less scrutiny than any other weapon. That’s because it isn’t a weapon until it is used as a weapon.

Some went out in small groups, but most went out in colony ships. At first there was much isolation brought on by the distance between various outposts and colonies. Some colonies survived many did not, those that survived grew thrived, those that didn’t often died in a brutal manner, rarely was there a rescue. It was not due to anyone’s lack of caring it was just that by the time anyone found out about the danger the colony was in, it was generally already too late and by the time some rescue party got there, there was no one to rescue.

In medieval times, surfs and town’s folk had their castles for protection. In the old West, on the frontier, the pioneers had military forts. As pioneers moved out into space the same was required for them as had been for other pioneers of the past. As in the past this task fell to the military. It did not matter that the military was an inadequately trained nor had the funding for this enormous task, the people that were going out into space wanted some protection or they would not go, and politicians also wanted this protection so that the people would want to go into space due to the overcrowding on earth, even though most of this protection was nothing more than smoke and mirrors. These space outposts became safety zones to the various space faring Pioneers. It wasn't enough. As in the past evil preyed on the weak and defenseless. That is about to change.

Two new patterns for me

Two new patterns for me to work on! But I have to wait for the yarn to be delivered. I love living out in the country, near a small town, but having to order things like yarn and await their delivery is a drawback~ However the peace and quiet far outweight the few drawbacks.

Both patterns are from Annie's Attic, and both are for summer tops. Tho they could also be worn in winter if made in a warmer yarn and worn with a jacket.

Socks by Hook

I recently bought the book, "Knit One, Purl Two, In Crochet" and decided to try it on a sock pattern that I like.

Using some Sassy Stripes yarn that was bought before everyone ran out of it, this is the first completed sock.

This pair fits well, and are comfortable. So now pairs 2, 3, and 4 are on my hooks. I am working on pair #3 until it is finished, then will move on to the next pair. Normally I have only one pair working at the time, but misjudged the size and made the start of one pair too large, so set them aside for someone else, and started another pair for myself. Pair #3 is for our daughter.

And then I started a pair for another friend, thus winding up with four pairs of socks in various stages of completion

I've seen that I like working on both socks of a pair, at the same time, so that when one sock is completed the second is not far behind.. It's easier for me to not wind up with several single socks with no mate by working them this way . . . Since FMS has set its claws in me, my attention span can be good, or it can be about the same as a gnat's~

Thanks to two efriends, I have been led to discover square knitting needles~ I had to stop knitting several years ago due to arthritis/carpal tunnel in both hands/wrists. But the square needles make it doable for me again. They are easier to hold and even pick up the yarn easier. Weird but true. For the double-strand slippers we like, I got a pair of #10 needles from Kollage. Later I want to get two pair of square wood needles from a seller on ebay, Coker Yarn - Knit Bin. I like the Kollage needles, but just want to try the wooden ones as well.

Learning lots of new things in my sixties! And it's fun!

A normal person looks at an egg and thinks “omelet” or “frittata.” A gardener (especially one who tends to be on the obsessive end of the spectrum) looks at an egg and thinks “yes! Eggshells!”

Five Ways to Use Eggshells in Your Garden

1. Add crushed eggshells to the bottom of planting holes, especially for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. These crops are susceptible to blossom end rot, which is caused by calcium deficiency. While this deficiency is most often caused by improper watering, there’s no harm in making sure your plants have a steady source of calcium. As the eggshells break down, they’ll nourish the soil, and your plants.

2. Use eggshells as pots for starting plants from seed. Then plant the seedling, “pot” and all, into the garden.

3. Use crushed eggshells to deter slugs, snails, and cutworms. These garden pests are a real pain in the gardener’s neck, and cutworms are the worst, killing seedlings by severing the stems at soil level. All three of these pests have soft undersides, and dislike slithering across anything sharp. Crushed eggshells, applied to the soil’s surface, may help deter these pests.

4. Add them to the compost pile. If you aren’t planting tomatoes or trying to deter slugs, add the eggshells to your compost pile, where they’ll add calcium to your finished compost.

5. If you are feeding birds in your yard, crush up the eggshells and add them to a dish near the feeder. Female birds, particularly those who are getting ready to lay eggs or recently finished laying, require extra calcium and will definitely appreciate it!

No matter how you want to use them, be sure to rinse the shells out well before using them in the garden.

Pinkie is a Loctollipop, she looks like an octopus but is a Sucker for pain!

She helps those of us with chronic pain, by easing our pain. Of course one has to believe that Pinkie can do her job, before she is able to.
Pinkie sits nearby, so she can keep her pearlized eyes on us, and using UPS, ummm I mean ESP, she does her best to drain the pain from our bodies, leaving us relaxed and contented.
Pinkie is an Animagurumi and her body is approximately 3" tall. She is NOT approved by the AMA nor by the FDA. But I have great faith in her.

DISCLAMER: Pinkie Pain Drain is only an Amigurumi. She is NOT a medical device, and other than being cute and relaxing to hold and look at, I make no claims about her powers of healing. Well, she does make one smile, and helps us to remember that others care about us. Those things alone help us feel better~

No, I did not misspell the word, these are indeed three Brain Suckers . . . . I love giving them to children when we are out & about. And the kids love them too.

I always ask their parents if I may give it to their children, without allowing the child to see it. That way if their folks say no, they aren't upset. So far no parent has said no, they seem to enjoy them as much as the kids do. And I probably enjoy them more than anyone~

Heated bed for cats & dogs

Our two cats are now ten years old. One of them has arthritis issues, and can be quite testy when she is in pain. We did not want to medicate her for the pain, due to side-effects of arthritis meds. Whether human or critter, they can cause stomach problems.

So we tried a cat bed that is heated. In fact, we bought it from Amazon, and it's the one in the side-bar.

She was a bit leary of it when we first got it, so I put one of her kitty blankets in it. Within a very few minutes she got into the bed and took a nap.

When she got in the bed, she had been limping and grumpy all day. When she got out of the bed after a lengthy nap, she was no longer limping and was in a "Happening" mood. When they have a Happening, they are bouncy, and full of mischief. They run, chase dust motes, play with their toys, and in general they entertain us.

Within a day, our other cat wanted to give the bed a try too. But #1 cat said in no uncertain terms, No Way! So another bed was ordered and gratefully received a few days later. As soon as I unpacked it, I put one of #2 cat's kitty-blankets in it. Peace again! Now both girls spend their naps in their beds, sometimes alone, sometimes together. And our Lucy cat seldom limps nowadays, even when I'm hurting due to a weather front moving through the area.

I really do love the beds, and highly reccommend them for any cat or dog with arthritis. Or any elderly cat/dog even when healthy. Like us, they tend to get cold easier as they age, and the beds are a blessing for them.

My best friend and I were in the diner, talking. As usual, it was very late and we were eating French fries with gravy. Like normal girls our age, we spent a lot of time in the diner while in college, and most of the time we spent talking about boys, music or trivial things, that seemed very important at the time. We never got serious about anything in particular and spent most of our time laughing.

As I went to take some of my medicine with a snack as I usually did, she watched me with an awkward kind of stare, instead of continuing the conversation. She then asked me out of the blue what it felt like to have Lupus and be sick. I was shocked not only because she asked the random question, but also because I assumed she knew all there was to know about Lupus. She came to doctors with me, she saw me walk with a cane, and throw up in the bathroom. She had seen me cry in pain, what else was there to know?

I started to ramble on about pills, and aches and pains, but she kept pursuing, and didn’t seem satisfied with my answers. I was a little surprised as being my roommate in college and friend for years; I thought she already knew the medical definition of Lupus. Then she looked at me with a face every sick person knows well, the face of pure curiosity about something no one healthy can truly understand. She asked what it felt like, not physically, but what it felt like to be me, to be sick.

As I tried to gain my composure, I glanced around the table for help or guidance, or at least stall for time to think. I was trying to find the right words. How do I answer a question I never was able to answer for myself? How do I explain every detail of every day being effected, and give the emotions a sick person goes through with clarity. I could have given up, cracked a joke like I usually do, and changed the subject, but I remember thinking if I don’t try to explain this, how could I ever expect her to understand. If I can’t explain this to my best friend, how could I explain my world to anyone else? I had to at least try.

At that moment, the spoon theory was born. I quickly grabbed every spoon on the table; hell I grabbed spoons off of the other tables. I looked at her in the eyes and said “Here you go, you have Lupus”. She looked at me slightly confused, as anyone would when they are being handed a bouquet of spoons. The cold metal spoons clanked in my hands, as I grouped them together and shoved them into her hands.

I explained that the difference in being sick and being healthy is having to make choices or to consciously think about things when the rest of the world doesn’t have to. The healthy have the luxury of a life without choices, a gift most people take for granted.

Most people start the day with unlimited amount of possibilities, and energy to do whatever they desire, especially young people. For the most part, they do not need to worry about the effects of their actions. So for my explanation, I used spoons to convey this point. I wanted something for her to actually hold, for me to then take away, since most people who get sick feel a “loss” of a life they once knew. If I was in control of taking away the spoons, then she would know what it feels like to have someone or something else, in this case Lupus, being in control.

She grabbed the spoons with excitement. She didn’t understand what I was doing, but she is always up for a good time, so I guess she thought I was cracking a joke of some kind like I usually do when talking about touchy topics. Little did she know how serious I would become?

I asked her to count her spoons. She asked why, and I explained that when you are healthy you expect to have a never-ending supply of “spoons”. But when you have to now plan your day, you need to know exactly how many “spoons” you are starting with. It doesn’t guarantee that you might not lose some along the way, but at least it helps to know where you are starting. She counted out 12 spoons. She laughed and said she wanted more. I said no, and I knew right away that this little game would work, when she looked disappointed, and we hadn’t even started yet. I’ve wanted more “spoons” for years and haven’t found a way yet to get more, why should she? I also told her to always be conscious of how many she had, and not to drop them because she can never forget she has Lupus.

I asked her to list off the tasks of her day, including the most simple. As, she rattled off daily chores, or just fun things to do; I explained how each one would cost her a spoon. When she jumped right into getting ready for work as her first task of the morning, I cut her off and took away a spoon. I practically jumped down her throat. I said ” No! You don’t just get up. You have to crack open your eyes, and then realize you are late. You didn’t sleep well the night before. You have to crawl out of bed, and then you have to make your self something to eat before you can do anything else, because if you don’t, you can’t take your medicine, and if you don’t take your medicine you might as well give up all your spoons for today and tomorrow too.” I quickly took away a spoon and she realized she hasn’t even gotten dressed yet. Showering cost her spoon, just for washing her hair and shaving her legs. Reaching high and low that early in the morning could actually cost more than one spoon, but I figured I would give her a break; I didn’t want to scare her right away. Getting dressed was worth another spoon. I stopped her and broke down every task to show her how every little detail needs to be thought about. You cannot simply just throw clothes on when you are sick. I explained that I have to see what clothes I can physically put on, if my hands hurt that day buttons are out of the question. If I have bruises that day, I need to wear long sleeves, and if I have a fever I need a sweater to stay warm and so on. If my hair is falling out I need to spend more time to look presentable, and then you need to factor in another 5 minutes for feeling badly that it took you 2 hours to do all this.

I think she was starting to understand when she theoretically didn’t even get to work, and she was left with 6 spoons. I then explained to her that she needed to choose the rest of her day wisely, since when your “spoons” are gone, they are gone. Sometimes you can borrow against tomorrow’s “spoons”, but just think how hard tomorrow will be with less “spoons”. I also needed to explain that a person who is sick always lives with the looming thought that tomorrow may be the day that a cold comes, or an infection, or any number of things that could be very dangerous. So you do not want to run low on “spoons”, because you never know when you truly will need them. I didn’t want to depress her, but I needed to be realistic, and unfortunately being prepared for the worst is part of a real day for me.

We went through the rest of the day, and she slowly learned that skipping lunch would cost her a spoon, as well as standing on a train, or even typing at her computer too long. She was forced to make choices and think about things differently. Hypothetically, she had to choose not to run errands, so that she could eat dinner that night.

When we got to the end of her pretend day, she said she was hungry. I summarized that she had to eat dinner but she only had one spoon left. If she cooked, she wouldn’t have enough energy to clean the pots. If she went out for dinner, she might be too tired to drive home safely. Then I also explained, that I didn’t even bother to add into this game, that she was so nauseous, that cooking was probably out of the question anyway. So she decided to make soup, it was easy. I then said it is only 7pm, you have the rest of the night but maybe end up with one spoon, so you can do something fun, or clean your apartment, or do chores, but you can’t do it all.

I rarely see her emotional, so when I saw her upset I knew maybe I was getting through to her. I didn’t want my friend to be upset, but at the same time I was happy to think finally maybe someone understood me a little bit. She had tears in her eyes and asked quietly “Christine, How do you do it? Do you really do this everyday?” I explained that some days were worse then others; some days I have more spoons then most. But I can never make it go away and I can’t forget about it, I always have to think about it. I handed her a spoon I had been holding in reserve. I said simply, “I have learned to live life with an extra spoon in my pocket, in reserve. You need to always be prepared.”

Its hard, the hardest thing I ever had to learn is to slow down, and not do everything. I fight this to this day. I hate feeling left out, having to choose to stay home, or to not get things done that I want to. I wanted her to feel that frustration. I wanted her to understand, that everything everyone else does comes so easy, but for me it is one hundred little jobs in one. I need to think about the weather, my temperature that day, and the whole day’s plans before I can attack any one given thing. When other people can simply do things, I have to attack it and make a plan like I am strategizing a war. It is in that lifestyle, the difference between being sick and healthy. It is the beautiful ability to not think and just do. I miss that freedom. I miss never having to count “spoons”.

After we were emotional and talked about this for a little while longer, I sensed she was sad. Maybe she finally understood. Maybe she realized that she never could truly and honestly say she understands. But at least now she might not complain so much when I can’t go out for dinner some nights, or when I never seem to make it to her house and she always has to drive to mine. I gave her a hug when we walked out of the diner. I had the one spoon in my hand and I said “Don’t worry. I see this as a blessing. I have been forced to think about everything I do. Do you know how many spoons people waste everyday? I don’t have room for wasted time, or wasted “spoons” and I chose to spend this time with you.”

Ever since this night, I have used the spoon theory to explain my life to many people. In fact, my family and friends refer to spoons all the time. It has been a code word for what I can and cannot do. Once people understand the spoon theory they seem to understand me better, but I also think they live their life a little differently too. I think it isn’t just good for understanding Lupus, but anyone dealing with any disability or illness. Hopefully, they don’t take so much for granted or their life in general. I give a piece of myself, in every sense of the word when I do anything. It has become an inside joke. I have become famous for saying to people jokingly that they should feel special when I spend time with them, because they have one of my “spoons”.

My Knitting foray into Cables

I have just "found" http://texturaphile.blogspot.com/ and love his work. Seeing his cable scarf prompted me to put this photo up;

While this is not a good photo, it was my first attempt to knit anything complicated. And to me, this fit the bill. It is in size XL for my husband. I did this while living in MO, but now we live in south Georgia where we seldom can wear wool.

And this is the "matching" sweater for myself, that I did next. It was so warm & snuggly, yet I seldom get the chance to wear it now. Usually our winters are just too mild. Tho the winter of '09-'10 did give me the chance a couple of times~

Unfortunately my hands no longer like Knitting, so I am confined mostly to crochet. Have recently bought the book "Knit One, Purl Two in Crochet" and hope that will fill the missing spot in my yarning enjoyment~ ~ ~

The Crossroads Café by Deborah Smith

I have just finished reading the most marvelous book. Primarily it centers on the fact that women don't have to be "physically beautiful" or "perfect" to be a beautiful woman. All it takes is confidence in yourself, and inner goodness.

The stars of the book are Cathy, a sucessful and beautiful actress who was severely burned & scarred in a vehicular accident. Thomas, a man who was emotionaly & mently scarred when he lost his wife and son in 9/11. A goat named Banger who has a hunger for cell phones. And two adorable little girls in need of stability and love. And least, but certainly not least, Delta, the lady who owns the Crossroads Cafe.

And the story takes place in the mountains of North Carolina, and written as though by a woman who grew up there.

Here are two quotes from near the end of the book'

Snow in Georgia? Time for hot tea and crochet~

When it is cold enough to snow in southern Georgia, it is time to stay home, heat up the kettle, keep the hot tea coming, and crochet all day!

Mine is in blue Lion Suede. What a delicious yarn! I love working with it, and it feel awesome.

If I had known how much I'd love it, I would have bought a LOT more than I did while Michaels had it on sale for $1.99 a skein. A LOT more!

Keeping warm in bed - crocheted vs. electric blankets

I hate the cold. Let me rephrase that - I really, really hate the cold. I mope around much of winter complaining about it. When I first heard about global warming years ago, like many others, I thought this to be an excellent prospect. Of course, after learning a little more about climate change related to global warming, I quickly changed my mind.

It's still a little brisk here of an evening, but with the northern hemsiphere heading into the colder months, I thought it time to look at the topic of electric blankets in relation to the environment. If you're considering buying/replacing an electric blanket this year, hold that thought for a moment.

I was a little surprised by the electricity consumption of these blankets. Under normal use, they consume somewhere between 60 watts an hour for a single and 100 watts an hour for a double on average.

It mightn't sound like much, but let's do a a couple of quick calculations to get an idea of the carbon dioxide emissions impact created by a coal fired power plant in order to generate the electricity for a blanket over a season:

100 watts x 8 hours = 800 watts
800 watts x 90 days = 72 kilowatts
72 x 1.5 pounds of carbon emissions per kw = 108 pounds

So, around 108 pounds or 49 kilograms of carbon dioxide associated with the use of each electric blanket over the coldest months of the year; each year. Now multiply that by the millions of people who use them and the amount becomes really substantial.

Added to the greenhouse gas emissions associated with electric blanket use, there's also these points to consider.

- The plastic coated wiring and other components that are used
- They are often made with synthetic fibers
- There's some debate as to health issues relating to electromagnetic fields
- The initial cost and then ongoing costs of electricity
- Fire/burn/shock risk

Aside from environmental issues, the fire and burn risk is really disturbing. It's estimated around 5,000 fires are caused by electric blankets in the UK alone annually. Electric blankets also present burn risks for the elderly and very young and others who may have problems registering pain or reacting to it.

When you dispose of your electric blanket, and for safety reasons that should be every 10 years maximum, many of its components will be around for generations to come; particularly the plastics.

I guess that in some areas of the world, electric blankets have their place and it's more earth friendly to use a blanket than to use room heating - but for many of us there are more environmentally friendly options to consider.

In our house we use a feather-down quilt and a crocheted top blanket that my partner made - that's it. Her creation made a huge difference.

Don't let the "holes" in a crocheted blanket fool you :). This has kept us warm and toasty through the winter, even when temperatures approached freezing. It's still a bit nippy when first diving under the covers, but that's only for a minute or two.

The blanket took a while to make, but you can buy these online from many places. Look for crocheted blankets that are made from wool, recycled cotton or perhaps even recycled nylon.

Costing a few hundred bucks for a queen size, these blankets and good quality down quilts are a little expensive, but view it as an item that will be long lasting and over time you'll probably save money through not having the ongoing electricity and replacement costs. A well made blanket like the one my partner made can be a family heirloom!

If you're not quite ready to give up your electric blanket, some folks simply turn their electric blanket on around 30 minutes before snooze time and then switch it off once in bed. You could also consider using a timer so the blanket switches on only during the coldest parts of the night.

You don't necessarily have to sacrifice comfort in order to live a greener life, but these small choices we make collectively do make a huge difference to our impact on the environment.

Christmas - a Time of Things and the Thoughts of Loved Ones

This is a wreath that our daughter made for me. It has raffia, toy cat jingle bells, and fabric with cat motiffs.

She makes these in any theme, and they are prettier than my feeble effort at photo taking can show.

The photo on the right, is the dear granddaughter of my best friend. She is wearing a furry batwing shawl that I made. Her hair is all tossled because she had just woken up, but insisted that her photo had to be made right now~
Isn't she a darling?

This is my Dad, whom I miss terribly. He was a true "Southern Gentleman"

No matter how old I manage to get, I will still want to be able to talk with him and get one of those loving Daddy Hugs~

And this is my Mother, whom I also miss horribly. She was a wonderful, loving woman, who always had time to listen to me, really listen, and I truly miss being able to chat with her.

She had hugs ready when I needed them, as well as a good solid proverbial kick in the butt when I needed that~

For us, the holidays are always a time of happiness, as well as remembering those we have lost. And especially a time to be thankful for those we still have with us~

It's fun to give crochet critters to children that are strangers. I pick the ones that are trying to behave, but having a hard time maintaining that adult demenor. Heck, I have a hard time doing it, so it's gotta be more difficult for a kid, right?

Baked Oatmeal Recipe

It's 'like a large baked oatmeal cookie with breakfast.'"

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

3 cups oatmeal
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine
2 eggs
2 cups milk
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Farenheit. Mix all ingredients together and pour into 13 x 9 inch buttered pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. The innkeeper also likes to add dried fruits and nuts and pour into small ramekins for baking and serving individually.

** I substitute 1/4 cup ground flax seed for 1/4 butter, and I add a Tbsp of cinnamon, and chopped nuts to taste, also I sprinkle a bit more cinnamon on top after it's in the pan.

Sometimes I make it in the 13x9 pan, other times I make it in muffin tins. Watch closely when in the muffin tins because the cooking time varies.

RAK Yarn

An e-friend sent me a surprise. A wonderful RAK! She sent yarns for me to use in making more things to donate for children this Christmas.

Some of it is awaiting "assignment" but most of it is already assigned for specific items. I'll have to work fast to finish the great-grandchildren's gifts so I can get going on the donate things.

See the greenish ball of yarn? It is shimmery and would be a beautiful ball-gown for a doll. Don't you think?

The little round box, has beautiful stitch markers in it. I have never had such pretty ones and can't wait to use them!

The note pad says "Got Guage?" which is a reminder that I surely need! My guage is frequently waaaaaay off~

Too busy - tired - hurting too badly to cook?

A cure for the "What To Cook For Supper" blues~

What to do when you're super busy, or too tired to cook, or hurting too badly to even think about the next meal, which happens to me frequently~:o) An easy meal, and one that kids usually like, is waffles (with an electric waffle maker so you can sit at the table to make & eat them) with toppings of mixed berries and whipped cream (using the frozen varieties of both).

I've used that for my busy/painful days for ages. All I have to do is get the berries & whipped cream thawed in time.

Since the berries are not sweetened, you can sweeten with your choice of sugar or a substitute. Sprinkle your choice of sweetener on top of the frozen berries, and allow them to thaw. And sit the frozen whipped cream/non-dairy whipped cream out to thaw, then go on with your day.

When it's time for supper, all you have to do is put out the beverages, napkins & silverware, sit the plates by the heating waffle iron on the table, and put the whipped cream & berries on the table. Then I stir up the waffle batter, sit myself down and start the waffles cooking.

Since it's just the two of us, and we prefer hot black coffee with this meal, I make the coffee a bit in advance and sit the caraft on the table for easy serving.

Guess what we are having for supper tonight? I an Not offering a prize for the correct guess since it's a pretty sure thing . . .

Gopher Tortoise in Georgia

I was taking a photo of the Climbing Blackeyed Susan plant one day last year, when I saw this little guy rapidly making his way towards me.

Since I'd never heard of an Attack Turtle before, I waited to see just how close it would come to me.

As you can see, it got pretty close, but still no attack~ So I waited.

And Waited . . .

.
.
And Waited . . .
.
.

. . . And the little guy totally ignored me, did not speed up as he passed me or while I followed to see where he was going. He then turned right to go behind the lawn supply shed and over to our daughter's storage shed, to dissapear down the new burrow he'd dug.

He, or his friends, have due tunnels in the south field far from our "yard" and right beside our yard, under the first fig tree we planted (which is now dying), under our daughter's storage shed, under my storage shet, in the east field, and under the trees out near the road. At least those are the only ones we've found . . .

They are a protected species here, but even if they were not we would not harm them. We don't kill any wildlife that comes in our yard. But we do kill most of the mice that come into our house. I don't think that's against state law~ ~ ~

Gopher Tortoise in Georgia

The gopher tortoise, also called a gopher or gopher turtle, is Georgia's state reptile and one of the high-priority animals listed in Georgia's State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP). Georgia's only tortoise grows to nearly 15 inches in carapace length (the length of the upper shell) and is found from southeastern Louisiana to southwestern South Carolina and from Georgia's fall line to southern Florida. The majority of tortoises are found in South Georgia and north-central Florida.
The gopher tortoise favors sandy soils south of the fall line. Prescribed fire is necessary to preserve its habitat since fire spurs groundcover growth and keeps dry upland habitats such as longleaf pine and scrub oak forests open.

With wide, hard-scaled front feet with large nails, the gopher tortoise is skilled at digging burrows, which provide critical refuge from temperature extremes and fires. Their tunnels average six feet deep and 15 feet long, though some run more than 40 feet. Tortoises often frequent more than one burrow in a year. Other species such as eastern indigo snakes and gopher frogs also depend on the burrows.

The gopher tortoise mainly grasses and low-growing plants, such as legumes, and also will dine on less desirable foods like prickly pear cactus and stinging nettle.

Breeding season lasts from April to July, when the female tortoises lay clutches of five to seven eggs in the sandy mound outside the burrow. Hatchlings emerge August to October, and male gopher tortoises take up to 18 years to reach sexual maturity, and females take up to 21 years.
Adult males will fight over females and burrows, ramming each other with their gular projections, elongated scutes or plates under their neck. Females and males also defend burrows by turning sideways in the tunnels, blocking access.

Conservation Efforts The gopher tortoise is a protected species and is state-listed as threatened in Georgia and federally listed as threatened in Louisiana, Mississippi and western Alabama. Since the species is protected, it cannot be handled without a permit, including for study and relocation.

Gopher tortoise populations suffer mainly from habitat loss and fragmentation due to forestry practices; development; fire suppression; disease; invasive species, such as fire ants that destroy eggs and hatchlings; decreased presence of juvenile tortoises from predators; and gassing burrows, an illegal practice used to locate rattlesnakes.
